Meeting story

   Saturday morning cartoons may turn into silence and disciplinary talk for students who break the rules. Tim Steele, stirred up some controversy as he proposed his new special Saturday morning session for students with disciplinary problems.

   The session would be help from 8 a.m. until noon on various weekends throughout the year. This new rule will cost the board $3,000 for staff alone, which ultimately will land in the cost of taxes for parents.

   “I know my son isn’t perfect, and I know he’ll probably wind up on the Saturday list at some point, but I’m not going to force him to go, “Peggy Bacon, a parent at the board meeting said. “I just don’t think it will make a difference, and the parents are going to pay for it in higher taxes as well as in ruined Saturdays.

   Senior student, Lisa Gallagher, has never landed herself in a detention before, and although this rule would most likely never affect her, she doesn’t agree with it. She brought up the question of what if the students simply do not show up. In answering her question, Steele explained said students would not be allowed to return to school until they served the detention.

   On the other hand, Bob Farley, of 64 Elm Street, liked the proposal of Saturday detentions. “Parents can whine all they want about this, but maybe it’s time parents in America were made to take a little responsibility for their kids,” Farely said. “That’s the whole problem, parents aren’t teaching their kids any discipline, so the kids have no respect for rules.”

   

News

The top story, and what everyone see on that front page defines the reading for that day. As we talked about in class, once you read one sad news article, it gets hard to keep flipping through and seeing all the same sad stories. Breaking news is supposed to be what's on the front page, but I'm curious as to what justifies the only news to seemingly be bad news, it gets depressing to be honest. Entertainment pieces are there to pick up the tone and break up the bad somewhat, but it's never what you see when you pick up the paper and look at the front page, it's always another kidnapping, or homicide, or even bombings (i.e. Seria).  Entertainment can only be so interesting when as well as news, it gets to be about the same people, all the time. For example, not everyone cares about how Miley Cyrus acted out again or another love song by Taylor Swift. It would be interesting to see everyday good news, among people no one might know but stands out among the rest of humanity and maybe even sends a little good into someones day. The digging to find this everyday is probably hard to come by, but if someone were to take the time to find those people, it would definitely be something worth caring about and reading everyday.

Chimpanzee drives a lexus (in class)

   Durham police officer, Susan Smythe, was in for a surprise when she pulled over what she thought to be a drunk driver swerving down Madbury road with its headlights off late Tuesday night.

   Smythe began to follow the car after it left the parking lot behind the Tin Palace on Main Street because its’ headlights were off. Also, the car had Wyoming plates, which she had never seen in Durham before, so she became suspicious.

   She pulled the car over on Madbury Road, got out of her vehicle and shined her flashlight as she approached the car, only to see 3 year old chimpanzee, Oliver Twist.

   “Well I looked in the window expecting a low life drunk driver slumped over the wheel,” said Smythe. “But I nearly fainted when I saw a chimp in the front seat grinning back at me.”

   Smythe called the Durham zoo keeper, who answered after being woken up from his deep sleep, ready to come to the rescue. He came in a pickup truck, with a cage in the back. He carefully transported the very strong chimp from the car to the truck and brought him to the Durham zoo.

   The chimp has considerably trumped the minds of the officials, thinking this sort of incident was impossible. Completely unsure of how the chimp made in from Lander to Cheyenne, where he stole the car then all the way to New Hampshire. It is being investigated further as the happy chimp lays in the Durham zoo, far away from home.

   The Lexus ES 300, the chimp was driving, was stolen from Cheyenne, Wyoming on Sunday morning. The chimp remains in the Durham zoo as officials investigate how the chimp made it from Wyoming to New Hampshire in just 3 days.

   According to the police Chief, Bo Diddley, the chimp escaped from a zoo in Lander, Wyoming on Saturday morning. The chimp somehow made in 1,986 miles in just 3 days, the mystery may never be solved.

Sitting on mountains

As I sat on the top on Mount Osceola, in Lincoln, New Hampshire I can't help but think to myself about how different life would be without news. A life where it is as simple as living off the land, without electronics and other modern creations. With evolution come a change in environment, and people and especially everything we come by and care about. Who is to say that these creations that are supposed to make our lives easier are actually complicating them to all extremes. Walking everywhere would be healthier, it would help the cause for a greener planet. Feeding off on the land would cause us to be more self sufficient. There are many plus' yet also a long line of downfalls depending who you talk to. It is interesting just to sit and think about what life would be like without all the things we have, and especially without such a large network of news.

Writing News

Writing news is never easy for those who like to babble and go on and on about the same thing. That's the good thing about it, it helps someone to focus their thoughts on one subject and write about it. When writing a news story it's almost instant that you realize how many different angles you can go about writing it, which is why the focus is so important. It is definitely very hard to transition from writing in essay form over to news writing, but making the difference and being able to switch back and forth makes one that much better the writer. It broadens their horizons and forces someone to break outside of their traditional form of writing. When you pick up a new style of writing, I feel it makes your writing that much more diversified.

How I got my story

Thinking of stories is always fun, but choosing is hard. This past week, rather than coming up with a story on my own, I let my surroundings help me to figure it out. Between friends conversations, word on the street, and so on, I came to the conclusion I wanted to write about what everyone cares about. Although that is a very wide topic, lately the topic of death caused by drugs/alcohol have been a huge subject of conversation. The curiosity that seemed most interesting, what how people felt about these deaths and their preventability. It sad to see someone die, but also people feel very strongly about the cause of death, and whether it really compares to that of a natural death, or rather that that isn't preventable and people wait on their final days. I found this interesting, and realized that with the interest of other people, it made a good topic to write about.

News habits

When it comes to news, there are a lot of options for how one informs themselves. From newspapers, to blogs, and even television networks. There is obviously preference amongst these options. One may rather listen to news, rather than reading it, or vis a versa. Personally, the Internet is a major source of information. Whether it be a blog, or a online newspaper, it is easy and quickly accessible. There is no specific knowledge that one should know each day, yet people should be aware of what is going on around them, day to day. While talking, and being introduced to classmates, it felt as if it was news in itself. Becoming more familiar of strangers and learning there hopes and desires for the future, was a sneak preview to what we should expect, or what we may be able to buy and read from the nearest book store, for example, those who wish to become authors and film makers and so on. News is created by those we may or may not know, doing things that affect us on a daly basis. These introductions showed many students in the process of doing big things, that one day might affect us all.
